Family Sponsorship
Canadian citizens and permanent residents who are 18 years of age or older may apply to sponsor close relatives who want to become permanent residents of Canada. Sponsors must promise to support the relative or family member and their accompanying family members for a period of between 3 to 10 years, depending on which family members they are sponsoring.
You can sponsor a relative from abroad if they are a member of the Family Class.
Members of the family class include:
-
spouse, common-law or conjugal partner;
-
-
Dependent child (no matter which parent is supporting the child, and also including children adopted overseas);
-
-
father or mother (Program to re-open on January 2, 2014);
-
-
grandfather or grandmother (Program to re-open on January 2, 2014);
-
-
brothers, sisters, nephews, nieces or grandchildren who are orphans, under the age of 18 and not married or in a common-law relationship child under age 18 to be adopted in Canada;
-
-
one relative, if there is no member of family class who is Canadian citizen, Indian or permanent resident or who could be sponsored.
